SCR surpasses targets in freight traffic and handles record passenger volume in first quarter (April-June 2012)


South Central Railway has registered a significant growth in the traffic volume handled – both in freight and passenger segments in the first quarter of the current fiscal, i.e., April to June 2012, vis-à-vis last year.The performance in the traffic volume and earnings for the first quarter is detailed below :
1.Gross Originating Earnings :
The gross originating earnings o­n SCR has shown an impressive growth of 28.5% during the first quarter of the current financial year, i.e., April to June 2012.The zone has earned an incremental revenue of Rs.550 crores with aGross Originating Earnings of Rs.2478 Crores in this period, as compared to Rs.1928 Crores last year.

2. Freight Segment :
South Central Railway turned out a commendable freight performance in the first Quarter of the current financial year, i.e., April to June 2012.As per the yearly target of 11.50 million tones assigned by Railway Board to SCR, its proportionate target for the first quarter stands at 26.77 million tonnes.But SCR actually moved 27.40 million tones during this period, surpassing its proportionate target for the first quarter by 0.66 million tones.It is up by 11% compared to the loading (24.74 million tonnnes) in the corresponding period of last year. The major commodities moved by SCR maintained their upward surge in this period.
Coal – Coal accounts for the largest chunk of freight loading o­n SCR. There was a quantum jump in the originating coal loading from M/s.Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, M/s.Western Coalfields Limited and imported coal from Krishnapatnam Port and Kakinada sea ports.The loading has been 15.13 million tonnes (approx.) during the first quarter of the current financial year as compared to 12.78 million tonnes loaded during the same period of last year, an improvement of 2.35 million tonnes (18.4%).It is 1.09 million tonnes (7.7%) higher over the proportionate target of 14.04 million tonnes.
Cement : Cement loading has shown a significant increase from the Cement plants of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra falling in the jurisdiction of SCR.The loading has been 7.25 million tonnes (approx) during the first quarter of the current financial year as compared to 5.96 million tonnes loaded during the same period of last year, an improvement of 1.30 million tonnes (21.8%). It is 0.92 million tonnes (14.6%) higher over the proportionate target of 6.33 million tonnes.
Food grains, fertilizers, containers and Petro products account for the remaining portion of freight segment.
The growth in freight loading is mainly aided by the spurt in the loading at Krishnapatnam and Kakinada sea ports.
Loading at Krishnapatnam Port : During the period, the loading at Krishnapatnam Port was 2.45 million tonnes as compared to 2.16 million tonnes loaded during the same period of last year, an improvement of 0.29 million tonnes (13.4%).
Loading at Kakinada Sea Ports Limited : During the period, the loading at Kakinada Sea Ports Limitedwas 1.22 million tonnes as compared to 0.69 million tonnes loaded during the same period of last year, an improvement of 0.53 million tonnes (76.6%).
Originating Freight Earnings : There was a significant increase of 40% in originating freight earnings during the first quarter of the current year. During this periodthe originating freight earnings were Rs.1855.88 Crores as against Rs.1325.61 Crores achieved in the same period of last year.
3. Passenger Segment :
During the first quarter, the passenger earnings also posted a healthy growth of 6.5% netting Rs. 524.31 Crores as compared to Rs.492 Crores for the same period of last year.
SCR handled around 99.3 million originating passengers o­n its system with a growth rate of 4% in this period.
