Alertness and Timely Action of the Loco Pilots Averted a Possible Major Train Mishap and Quick Restoration Done in the case of Derailment of one Coach of an Express Train Near Kavali
There has been a derailment of half portion of one coach (i.e., 4 wheels of Second Class Luggage Cum Brake van Coach (SLR), next to Train Engine ) of Train No. 12666 Kanyakumari-Howrah Express at around 02:40 hrs of today i.e., 22nd September,2013, between Sri Venkateshwarapalem and Kavali Stations on Gudur - Vijayawada downline section of Vijayawada Division.
This incident occurred due to run overof a herd of cattle, which strayed on to the rail track area. on noticing the herd of cattle on track, the Crew in the Engine of the affected train have immediately responded and applied emergency brakes. The train , which was running at a speed of around 72 kmph at that time, was deftly brought under control and was stopped quickly by the Loco Pilots within a short distance . Some of the Cattle were run over and four wheels of the SLR Coach got derailed as the carcass were stuck underneath the affected coach.
The alertness and timely action of the Train Crew present in the Engine- Shri S. Ravindran, Loco Pilot and Shri R. Velu, Asst. Loco Pilot has averted a possible major mishap and their sharp / apt reaction has resulted in minimizing the adverse impact of the derailment.
No casualities / injuries reported to anybody. Around 25 passengers were found to be travelling in the affected coach. Soon after the incident , they were shifted by the onboard railway staff to the adjacent coaches of the train with out much inconvenience to the passengers . Accident Relief Train from Bitragunta has immediately been rushed to the spot and the prompt action of the restoration team under the supervision of senior officers ensured that the derailed coach was put on rails by 06:15 hrs ie, with in a short span of 3 hrs and 35 minutes. The affected Train, No.12666 Express resumed its onward journey at 07:15 hrs from Sri Venkateswarapalem station. Shri Pradeep Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Vijayawada along with senior Railway officials rushed to the spot by a special Train and supervised the restoration measures.
