Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) – Future fuel for Locomotives of Indian Railways

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) – Future fuel for Locomotives of Indian Railways
In a move to adopt environment friendly and cost effective alternate fuel, the Indian Railways has taken up various projects on utilization of natural gas as fuel for its fleet of diesel locomotives. Under this, Research Design & Standard Organisation (RDSO), a research wing of the Ministry of Railways based at Lucknow, is actively working on development of a prototype of locomotive based on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Once the prototype is proven on field, Indian Railways plan to build another 20 LNG based locomotives on the same concept. With the introduction of such technology, there is going to be 50% reduction in operating cost of locomotives even at the current enhanced LNG prices. In addition, there is an elimination of visible smoke from these locomotives and significant reductions in other regulated and unregulated emissions like NOx etc. Once Indian Railways switches over completely to natural gas as fuel for its diesel locomotives, it would amount to only 2.2% of India’s annual natural gas consumption of 81 million tons and therefore commercially feasible.

At present, Indian Railways are running its fleet of locomotives on predominantly two fuels, i.e. diesel and electricity. Prices of both these fuels have been rising rapidly due to increasing prices of crude oil/imported coal, devaluation of Rupee etc. Natural gas is emerging as a promising fuel of the future. This natural gas is availablein the form of conventional natural gas, shale gas, gas hydrates etc. With the introduction of economical processes of extraction of shale gas, exploitation of shale gas reserves has become a commercial reality.

India also has substantial reserves of natural gas in the form of conventional natural gas, shale gas and gas hydrates. According to an estimate, India has 1241 billion cubic metres of conventional gas, 7462.5 billion cubic metres of recoverable shale gas reserves and 1890 trillion cubic metres of gas hydrates. USA and Canada have become the world’s highest exporters of natural gas on account of their shale gas reserves.

To make use of global reserves of natural gas, India is setting up infrastructure for import of LNG into the country. Even LNG terminals are in various stages of setting-up on the east and west coasts of India, all with railway connectivity.

Construction work begins on the dwarka-Najafgarh Metro corridor

Construction work begins on the dwarka-Najafgarh Metro corridor
Construction work on the much awaited Dwarka – Najafgarh Metro corridor started today on the elevated section of the corridor between Dwarka and Najafgarh depot. On this occasion, a bhoomi pujan was done by DMRC.

The Dwarka – Najafgarh section will be 4.4 kilometres long with three stations. The length of the elevated section will be 2.75 kilometres; the ramp towards the underground section will be 595 metres while the underground section will be 1.085 kilometres long.

The three stations on the corridor will be – Dwarka (elevated), Najafgarh Depot (elevated) and Municipal Corporation (underground). There was a public demand to take the Metro towards the Dhansa bus stand in Najafgarh which would be possible only by making the last station of the corridor as underground.

The construction of an elevated corridor would have resulted in the demolition of a lot of buildings. In order to meet the public demand and avoid such inconvenience to the people, the last part of the alignment is planned to be made as underground.

The entire stretch will be on broad gauge and will be opened for commuter operations by December, 2016. In 2016, about 76,000 commuters are expected to travel by this corridor. By the year 2021-22, the ridership is expected to increase to over 1 lakh passengers everyday.

The tenders for the elevated section have been finalized and awarded to M/s ITD Cementation. The tenders for the remaining stretch of the corridor are also expected to be floated soon after getting the necessary clearances.

This corridor will provide easy access to the commuters residing in Najafgarh, Mitraon, Jharoda Kalan, Kair, Dichaon Kalan, Dindarpur Extn., Baba Haridas Nagar, Chhawla, Roshanpura, Shyam Vihar, Dharmpura, Sai Baba Enclave, Nangli Sakravati, Arjun Park, Roshan Garden, Shiva Enclave, Todarmal Colony, Prem Nagar, New Hira Park, Ajay Park, Nathu Ram Park, Gemini Park, Shiva Enclave, Raghubir Nagar etc.

Delhi Metro Introduces Addiotional Trains on Line-6 both Platforms can be used for boarding trains going towards badarpur at central secretariat metro station of line-6

The Delhi Metro has introduced two additional trains on Line-6 (Central Secretariat to Badarpur) from today, making it a total of 22 trains in passenger service on this line. The move is aimed at better passenger handling, especially at the interchange station of Central Secretariat.

Till now, only one Platform was being used for boarding and deboarding of passengers at Central Secretariat Metro station of Line-6. However, with the introduction of these two additional trains, it has been made possible that passengers can now avail the trains from both the platforms alternately for going towards Badarpur. This move has also ensured the increase in frequency of trains on this line from 3 minute 44 seconds to 3 minute 25 seconds and trains will also run 13 extra trips making it a total of 401 trips.

Since both the platforms are being used and alternate trains would be available at both the platforms at Central Secretariat regularly during the morning peak hours (8:30 am to 11:00 am), the passengers are advised not to rush to other platform.

Presently, the average ridership of Line-6 is 1.60 Lakh. The Delhi Metro’s network is among the fastest growing networks in the world, it has grown to 190 kms of operational network since it has started its operations in 2002 and is presently carrying about 25 Lakh passengers every day.

Delhi Metro Viaduct To Cross Over Railway Line and Modi Mill Flyover At okhla.

The elevated viaduct of the underconstruction Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden corridor of the Delhi Metro will pass over the Delhi – Mumbai railway tracks as well as the Modi Mill flyover between the Okhla Phase 3 and Ishwar Nagar Metro stations.

Between these two Metro stations, which will be located at a distance of about one kilometre from each other, the Delhi Metro engineers are going to encounter two major construction related challenges, which are, crossing the ever busy Delhi – Mumbai railway corridor as well as the two important loops of the Modi Mill flyover.

For crossing the railway corridor, which consists of five tracks, DMRC is planning to install a steel bridge, as the installation of such a bridge will cause minimal disruption to the railway operations below. This bridge will cross the tracks at a height of about 17 metres. However, the requisite permissions for starting construction work over the railway lines is expected soon.

After crossing the railway tracks, the viaduct will also pass over two loops of the Modi Mill flyover which lead to the two sides of the Mathura Road below (towards Ashram and towards Badarpur). The construction work over both these crucial loops will be carried out without causing any disruption to the flow of traffic below.

While the length of the span crossing over the first loop towards Ashram will be 34 metres, the length of the span over the second loop towards Badarpur will be 37 metres. Segmental launching technology will be used for carrying out construction on this stretch. The viaduct will come up at both the locations at a height of 17 metres.

The construction work of this portion of the viaduct has already been started. While work on the construction of the piers near the flyover are almost over, the launching girder to be used for the launching of the segments has also started work about a fortnight back. The construction of the viaduct over these two loops of the Modi Mill flyover is expected to be completed by the end of October.

As the alignment of the corridor is passing along the Modi Mill flyover, the area available to the engineers for constructing the viaduct is also very narrow. Despite such space constraint, the Modi Mill flyover has been kept entirely available for traffic.

The Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden corridor of Delhi Metro’s Phase 3 is 36.5 kilometres long with 24 stations. The construction work of the entire corridor is currently in progress and the work is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.

Metro Update

1.    The DMRC carried over 26 lakh passengers yesterday (19.08.2013) thus setting a new ridership record establishing itself as a major mass transit facility in the National Capital Region.

2.    The earlier ridership record achieved by DMRC was 25, 04,900 on 08th August, 2013.
In view of the increasing ridership, DMRC has inducted the first 8 coach train on Line 3 yesterday. It plans to induct a total of 68 eight coach trains on Line 2and 3, out of which 31 trains will run on line 3 and 37 on line 2.

3.    Disruption on Line 3: Metro rail services were partially disrupted on line 3 between Karol Bagh and RK Ashram Metro stations from 12.40 PM to 2 PM due to a problem in an insulator located on the over head electrification poles near the RK Ashram Metro station.
As the insulator has failed once again and prima facie it appears to be design defect in these insulators. Therefore, DMRC has decided to:
1)    Provide sealant at all the existing insulators as a short term measure.
2)    Plan and replace insulators progressively as a long term permanent measure.
3)    As such about 2,776 insulators falling between the RK Ashram and Dwarka Metro stations are being attended to during the night hours after the closure of the train services.
4)    As the working time for such activity is limited to only about three to four hours when the trains are not running, DMRC will be able to replace around 25 insulators per night
Additional Information:
·         In urban Mass Rapid Metro operations, overhead electric supply poles are located at a distance of 40 meters with two insulators on each OHE mast. Thus, the Metro electrical engineers have to locate the faulty insulator after checking all insulators in that particular section. Once it Is located, the insulator is replaced within few minutes by DMRC’s engineers.

·         The insulators used in Line 3 are made up of Ethyl Venyl Acetate which was the prevalent technology when these insulators were installed. However, for the Metro corridors which were constructed later, Insulators with silicon rubbers have been used, which is an advancement over the earlier technology and the likelihood of such faults occurring on this type of insulators is less.
