ADVANCEMENT IN SIGNALLING TECHNOLOGY CAN HERALD SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN CAPACITY UTILIZATION ON RAILWAYS – G.N.ASTHANA, GM/SCR


The Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication (IRISET) celebrated its 54th Annual Day today, i.e, 24th November, 2011 at its campus at Tarnaka, Secunderabad o­n a grand scale.Shri G.N.Asthana, General Manager, South Central Railway presided over the programme, while Shri A.K.Misra, Additional Member (Telecom), Railway Board was the Guest of Honour.

Addressing the gathering, Shri G.N.Asthana, General Manager, S.C. Railway, said that training institutions are playingavital role in pluggingthe knowledge gap andIRISET has made its mark as the premier institution in the realms of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication trainingin India. The adoption of new technology in signaling is virtually limitless, he added. Speaking o­n the importance of signal engineering, the General Manager stressed that modernization of the same o­n continuous basis will lead to a significant increase in line capacity utilization o­n Indian Railways, thereby helping run more number of trains. He cited the example of China which has got the same track network but able to run double the number of trains o­n account of modernization of signaling system. Shri Asthana also praised IRISET for its e-learning initiative as also the distance learning mode which is very suitable in terms of the large work force and net work of Indian Railways. He also gave away awards to trainees who excelled in various training courses at the Institute during the year.

Shri A.K Misra, Additional Member, Telecom, Railway Board, praised IRISET for its eminence as a premier Institute in the Afro-Asian region and expressed confidence that it will become world class. He opined that the Public Sector Undertakings as well as the private sector including the Metro Rail systems coming up can get their man power trained at IRISET. He stressed that safety crash courses are the need of the hour to activate safety awareness.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Shri R.L. Gupta, Director, IRISET, briefed o­n the performance of the Institute which was established in 1957. There is a quantum increase in the number of personnel trained each year with 2373 trainees having been impartedtraining till October, 2011 in the current year. The institute invites experts from Zonal Railways as well as from Industry to deliver lectures o­n specialized subjects. A workshop o­n “Diagnostic Tools and Net working for reliability, improvement of Signaling systems” conducted today has seen the participation of various equipment manufacturers and senior officers, the Director Informed.

The awards distribution was followed by a cultural programme which enthused the audience.
