Tatkal Ticket Guide Indian Railways

The Tatkal Scheme is an Indian Railways scheme for booking journeys at very short notice. It was introduced by the then railway minister Nitish Kumar in all forms of reserved class in almost all the Mail/ Express trains in India.

These tickets can be booked over the counter and on the internet through the website of IRCTC.




Ticket booking under Tatkal scheme opens at 10 am on the date previous to the date of the journey from the train-originating station (i.e., one day before). However, the day of the journey is defined as the day of chart preparation. So, if the train starts, say, on the 3rd, and reaches the desired boarding station on the 4th. \ during the actual journey

10 AM is the booking starting time for AC seats and 11 AM for SLEEPER seats.

There are no separate trains defined as Tatkal trains. Non-utilized Tatkal tickets are released to wait-listed passengers. Confirmed tatkal tickets can be cancelled but no refunds will be provided. But, wait-listed tatkal tickets can be cancelled with refunds.

In those trains and in those classes where average utilization of Tatkal accommodation during the peak period of April to September is 80% and above, the Tatkal charges that are applicable during the peak period will be charged throughout the year, i.e., for both the peak and the non-peak periods.

The above charges will be levied uniformly both in peak period & non-peak periods.

Tatkal tickets will be issued for actual distance of travel, instead of end-to-end, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. The same Tatkal berth/seat may be booked in multiple legs till preparation of charts. At the time of preparation of charts, unutilized portion may be released to the General RAC/Waiting list passengers.

Tatkal facility is also available in Executive Class of Shatabadi Express trains also, by earmarking 10% of the accommodation available i.e. 5 seats per coach.

Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM for AC Classes and 11 AM for NON-AC Classes on One days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey w.e.f. of 15.06.2015(commercial circular no:34 of 2015). e.g. for train leaving on 6th, Tatkal Booking will Commence at 10 AM for AC Classes on 5th and at 11 AM for NON-AC Classes on 5th.

No duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued. Duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued only in exceptional cases on payment of full fare including Tatkal charges.

At the time of Tatkal ticket booking no need to furnish identity proof, Only one passenger needs to produce any one of the following proof of identity in the original during the journey:-

1.Voter Photo identity card issued by Election Commision of India.

2.Passport

3.PAN Card issued by Income Tax Department.

4.Driving Licence issued by RTO.

5.Photo identity card having serial number issued by Central/State Government.

6.Student Identity Card with photograph issued by recognized School/College for their students.

7.Nationalized Bank Passbok with photograph.

8.Credit cards issued by banks with laminated photograph.

9.Unique Identification Card "Aadhaar".

10.Photo identity cards having serial number issued by Public Sector Undertaking of State/Central Government, District Administration, Municipal bodies and Penchant Administration.

Agents / RTSAs/Web service agents/Web agents of IRCTC are restricted from the booking Tatkal tickets between 1000 hours and 1200 hours. This restriction shall be enforced through frequent inspection at the counters. The agents both web service agents and web agents shall also be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets on the internet between 1000 hours and 1200 hours.

Even for internet booking for Tatkal tickets, the passenger shall enter the identity proof type and number, which is to be used for travel. These details shall be printed on the ERS/indicated on the VRM/MRM as well as in the reservation chart.

It will be possible to book a maximum of only four passengers per PNR forTatkal tickets.

The web services agents of IRCTC will be permitted to book only one Tatkal ticket per train per day on the internet.

The facility of change of name is not permitted on the bookings made under Tatkal scheme

TDRs are not being issued for waiting list tickets.

REFUNDS - No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets/duplicate tatkal ticket except in case of circumstances mentioned in para 2 of instructions contained in Commercial Circular no. 53 of 2006 issued vide letter no. 2006/TGII/ 20/P/Tatkal, dated 30.06.2006. However, full refund of fare and tatkal charges will be granted on the tickets booked under Tatkal scheme in the following circumstances :-

If the train is delayed by more than 3 hours at the journey originating point of the passenger & not the boarding point if the passenger's journey originating point and boarding point are different.

If the train is to run on a diverted route and passenger is not willing to travel.

If the train is to run on diverted route and boarding station or the destination or both the stations are not on the diverted route.

In case of non attachment of coach in which Tatkal accommodation has been earmarked and the passenger has not been provided accommodation in the same class.

If the party has been accommodated in lower class and does not want to travel. In case the party travels in lower class, the passenger will be given refund of difference of fare and also the difference of Tatkal charges, if any.

Tatkal Booking 

1. What are the various classes of travel available in Tatkal? 
A. Tatkal bookings are allowed in all classes except First AC and Executive class.

2. Can I select ladies or general quota along with tatkal quota? 
A. Ladies and general quota cannot be opted for along with Tatkal quota.                                                                                                                                                    
3. How can I use the internet reservation facility to book Tatkal quota?
A. You have to select the Tatkal check box in the 'Plan my travel' page along with other details for booking tatkal ticket. For some trains/class/locations Tatkal quota maynot be available .Please check the availability before proceeding further.  
4. What are the concesions available in Tatkal scheme?
A.No concession is allowed in Tatkal Booking.

5. How much extra should I pay for my ticket?

A.

Tatkal charges per passenger in addition to normal ticket .

The Tatkal Charges have been fixed as a percentage of fare at the rate of 10% of basic fare for second class and 30% of basic fare for all other classes subject to minimum and maximum as given in the table below:-

6.When I can book a tatkal I-ticket and e-ticket ?
Tatkal E-ticket can be booked for selected trains one day in advance excluding date of journey from the train originating station. It can be booked on the opening day from 10:00 hrs for AC class (1A/2A/3A/CC/EC/3E) and at 11:00 hrs for Non- AC class(SL/FC/2S) . e .g. if train is to depart from originating station on 2nd August, Tatkal Booking for AC class will Commence at 10:00 AM and for Non AC class will Commence at 11:00 AM on 1st August.

Note:Tatkal I-Tickets cannot be booked.


 7.Can I book tatkal ticket from all locations?
 A.Tatkal tickets will be issued for actual distance of travel, instead of end-to-end, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. The same Tatkal berth/seat may be booked in multiple legs till preparation of charts.For some trains/class/locations Tatkal quota may not be available. Please check the availability before booking.  

8.Can I book tatkal I-ticket to all places of delivery provided in irctc site?
A.No,Tatkal I-Ticket can not be booked.

9. What are the rules for cancellation?
A.No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. For contingent cancellation & waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules. Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is allowed but at least one passenger with ID card printed on ERS/VRM should not be cancelled. On cancellation of all the passengers whose ID card details is printed on ERS/VRM, all the passengers on that e-ticket will be cancelled.
