Work on Widening of Road Over Bridge at Lakdi-ka-pul progressing fast
The existing Road Over Bridge at Lakdi-ka-pul between Hyderabad and Khairatabad Railway Stations caters to a huge density of vehicular traffic and sees a chaotic flow almost through the entire day.It became imperative that this Road Over Bridge is widened to ease the flow of traffic, which moves towards Punjagutta / Erragadda in one direction and towards Mehdipatnam / Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad in the other direction.
South Central Railway, on the request of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has taken up the widening of this Road Over Bridge. The present carriage way of the existing bridge is 9.70 metres width . As a part of the widening of this Road Over Bridge, it is proposed to provide an additional carriage way of 11 metres width with a footpath of 2 metres.The estimated cost of the project is Rs.9.14 Crores. The work which commenced on 15th July 2011, is scheduled for time bound completion in 90 days.
A guided Media Tour was organized today i.e 06th August 2011 to highlight the construction work at the bridge. Shri S.K.Sharma, Chief Administrative Officer/ Construction, South Central Railway briefedthe Media. Shri K.Sambasiva Rao, Chief Public Relations Officer, Shri Rama Raju, Dy. Chief Engineer and a host of other Railway Officials were also present.
The Road Over Bridge comprises of one span of 23 mtrs with open foundations, cement concrete abutments and returns and steel composite superstructure.The steel composite superstructure, i.e., RCC deck slab supporting on steel girders is adopted to speed up the construction. In this method, the steel composite girders are fabricated simultaneously in an approved workshop along with the construction of sub-structure at site.This method of construction leads to a great reduction in the time taken to complete the work. As against a period of completion of 12 months for conventional Road Over Bridges, it is proposed to complete this bridge within a short period of 3 months.
The substructure is proposed with M-30 grade concrete and deck slab is proposed with M-40 grade concrete using ready mix concrete produced under controlled conditions at central mixing plant and transported through special carriers having concrete agitating and pumping arrangement.The concrete is pumped to final location and vibrated to make it dense and strong.About 2100 Cu.Metres of concrete will be used for this work.
The work also involves fabrication and erection of 9 steel girders weighing approximately 130 MTs.These girders are manufactured with structural steel confirming to IS-2062-1999, duly welded using submerged Arc welding in an approved workshop.The pieces will be joined using high strength friction grip bolts.The girders are metalized and painted with four coats of paint to avoid corrosion and to enhance their life.These girders after fabrication and testing will be launched using 100 ton cranes and suitably connected. Further on, the RCC deck slabs will be cast.
This modern construction method requires imposition of speed restriction of
50 KMPH for about 15 days on the train movements at the work site, as against the conventional method which requires speed restriction of 20 KMPH for 3 months.
