Karaikal broad gauge line opened

The long felt dream of the people of Karaikal fulfilled on Saturday when the new broad gauge line laid from Nagore to Karaikal was inaugurated. It was a momentous occasion for the public of this port town when the Union Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa flagged off the Chennai-bound Kamban Express at a gala function organised at the Karaikal railway station.

The historic event marked the restoration of rail link to Karaikal after a gap of several years. The operation of rail service from and to Karaikal would pave the way for the socio-economic development of this town further, Mr. Muniyappa said at the inaugural function.Calling it an auspicious day, he said the opening of rail link would enable more number of people of this area in getting employment opportunities.Karaikal occupied a significant place as it provided a vital link to Nagore and Velankanni.Replying to the demands from the MLAs and MPs for restoring the rail link from Karaikal to Peralam and for providing rail connectivity to Salem and Mayiladuthurai besides operation of train services to various destinations from Karaikal, Mr. Muniyappa said the requirements would be looked into by his Ministry.Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy said commencement of rail services from Karaikal would significantly boost the development of this region.He urged the Railway Minister to take steps to operate train from Karaikal to Tiruchi.MLAs A.M.H. Nazeem and P.R.N. Thirumurugan appealed to the Minister of State for Railways for restoring the rail link from Karaikal to Peralam. Nagapattinam MP A.K.S. Vijayan urged the railway Minister to take steps to operate a train from Karaikal to Ajmer. Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan said the inauguration of the new BG line would provide rail connectivity to Tiruchi, Chennai, Coimbatore and Ernakulam from Karaikal.
