Various organisations in Bhatkal on Sunday staged a rail roko demanding the stop for Chatrapathi Shivaji Terminal (CST)–Mangalore Superfast train in Bhatkal. Hundreds of protesters squatted on the railway line in Bhatkal Railway Station and blocked the train for over 10 minutes.
Local Block Congress Committee had organised the protest.
The JD(S) unit of Bhatkal joined the protest later. In a memorandum to the railway authorities, the protesters said that Bhatkal being one of the important commercials and tourist places of coastal Karnataka, a large number of tourists travelled to Mumbai every day.
But most superfast trains had no stop in Bhatkal. This caused inconvenience to the people, the protesters alleged.
They said that despite repeated request to stop the express trains at Bhatkal Railway Station, action was not taken by the Railway authorities. So, the people of Bhatkal were forced to protest and hold rail roko programme on Sunday. It was the first step towards its protest against the railway authorities, the memorandum warned.
Leaders of various organisations such as Surendra Shanabhag, Vittal Naik, Parvez Kashimji, Sadiq Matta, F.K. Moger, Inayatullah Shabandri, and Sayyad Hassan Barmavar were present.
