Collision of Hampi Express at Penukonda Station

TRAIN NO.16591 HUBLI-BANGALORE CITY HAMPI EXPRESS COLLIDED WITH

A STABLED GOODS TRAIN FROM REAR PORTION AT PENUKONDA STATION o­n BANGALORE DIVISION OF SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

The Bangalore bound Hampi Express (Train No.16591) which left from Hubli at 18-00 hrs. o­n 21st May, 2012, collided with rear portion of a stabled Goods Train at Penukonda Railway Station situated o­n Dharmavaram-Bangalore section (in Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh) o­n Bangalore Division of South Western Railway in the early hours i.e. 03-09 hrs. of today (22nd May, 2012). In this accident, o­ne Second Class Luggage-cum-brake Van (SLR) next to Hampi Train engine andOne General Second Class(GS) coach (third coach from Train engine) were affected.Second class Luggage-cum-brake van (SLR) was lifted up and its front portion caught fire. Third coach from train engine was lifted up.

As a result of the accident, 22 passengers of Hampi Express were reported dead and 36 passengers injured at the time of issue of this press bulletin. The injured passengers were taken by Ambulance for treatment to State Govt. Hospitals at Penukonda, Hindupur, Satyasai Hospital, Putaparthi and Pavagadu Hospital in Anantapur District.AccidentRelief Train and Breakdown Van(MFD) reached to the accident site for attending rescue operations. Another Medical Relief Van from Hindupur as well as from Dharmavaram arrived at the accident spot at 04-50 hrs.Besides, 2 nos. of 140 tonne cranes have reached the site and rescue operation have been completed.Rail route between Guntakal and Bangalore has already been restored and trains are running as usual.

On receipt of information Minister of Railways, Shri Mukul Roy who was supposed to go to Delhi from Kolkata to attend Parliament session, changed his programme and left for Bangalore by flight from Kolkata and has reached the accident site. o­n arrival Minister of Railway announced ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lacs to the kins ofthose killed in the accident, 1 lac for those seriously injured and Rs 50000 for those with minor injury. Shri K.H.Muniyappa, Minister of State for Railways has also left from Delhi to reach the accidentsite..Shri Vinay Mittal, Chairman, Railway Board, New Delhi who was in Allahabad for inspection, cut short his visit andleft for the site immediately by flight.

Besides, Shri K.K.Srivastava, Member Traffic, Railway Board and Shri Keshav Chandra, Member Mechanical, Railway Board, New Delhi also left for the accident site

Shri A.K. Mital, General Manager, South Western Railway with other Principal Heads of Departments have reached the accident site by Special train.Divisional Railway Manager and other senior officials of Bangalore Division along with Doctors and para-medical staff are attending rescue operations.Shri S.K.Mittal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore also rushed to the accident site from Bangalore.

South Western Railway arranged adequate buses for transportation of stranded passengers of Hampi Express to reach their destination bound for Bangalore City.Some of the stranded Passengers left by Nizamuddin-Bangalore Rajdhani Express and CST(Mumbai)-Bangalore Udyan Express to Bangalore City.SWR has also provided Help lines at various stations, their Phone Numbers are mentionedbelow :

As a result of the above accident, Train Nos. 12785 Kacheguda-Bangalore Express, Train No.12494 Nizamuddin-Bangalore Rajdhani Express, Train No.16529 Mumbai(CST)-Bangalore Udyan Express and Train No.17211 Machilipatnam-Yesvantpur Express & Train No. 17308 Bagalkot-Yesvantpur Basava Express were running late.As a result of the accident, the following trains are cancelled today(22.05.2012).

1.Train No.16558Bangalore – Mysore Express,

2.Train No.16559Mysore- Yesvantpur Express,

3.Train No.57438Hindupur – Guntakal Passenger.

Cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.In the meantime, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) enquiry is ordered.Officials of South Western Railway are continuously monitoring the rescue operations and also to restore the track for rail traffic at the earliest. The list of causalities and list of injured are mentioned below.

Total No. of casualties :22 Nos.The bodies of the casualties identified are 06 Nos. They are,

3.Kum. Pavani Bai (F-12)-- do --

6.Shri Ramachandrappa (M)

All the above causalities are kept at Penugonda Govt. Hospital.The remaining 16casualties are yet to be identified.
