India’s 11th President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam today described the Delhi Metro as an asset to the nation and congratulated it for cultivating a culture of excellence in its functioning.
“DMRC is indeed a great organization of excellence. It is environment friendly, user friendly and above all DMRC is an asset to the nation,” Dr. Kalam wrote in the visitor’s book during a visit to the Delhi Metro system today.
During his first ever visit to the Metro system, the 11th President boarded the Metro at the Central Secretariat Metro station and traveled up to Rajiv Chowk, where he saw the interchange arrangements for the Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre (Yellow Line) and the Dwarka Sector 21 – NOIDA City Centre (Blue Line) corridors.
From Rajiv Chowk, he traveled up to Ramkrishna Ashram Marg station to see the elevated section and then traveled back up to Barakhamba Road on the underground section from where he came to Metro Bhawan, the corporate headquarters of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
At Metro Bhawan, Dr. Kalam addressed the employees on the topic, ‘Dynamics of Leadership’. During his address, he appreciated Delhi Metro for maintaining a clean, safe and environment friendly system.
“Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been rightly certified by the United Nations as the first Metro rail and rail-based system in the world to get "carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions" and helping in reducing pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tonnes of every year. Let me congratulate all the members of DMRC for operating and maintaining a clean, safe and efficient transport system for the citizens of Delhi and other commuters,” he said.
“Each one of you has cultivated a culture of excellence and congratulations to you for this,” Dr. Kalam added.
The 11th President was accompanied during the visit by DMRC’s Managing Director, Sh. Mangu Singh, Director (Electrical) Sh. Satish Kumar, Director (Operations) Sh. Sharat Sharma and Director (Finance) Sh. KK Saberwal.
Delhi Metro today operates on a network of 190 kilometres spread across seven different corridors. In the last one year, it has maintained a punctuality rate of 99.7 percent.
