The month of May, being the peak summer season with large number of summer special trains and additional coaches to existing trains, witnessed heavy rush of rail passengers. In order to ensure a comfortable and secure travel to the bon-fide passengers, SCR undertook a series of focused checks against ticketless / irregular travel involving 2600 ticket checking staff in all its six Divisions.
During the Month of May, 2013, Ticket Checking Staff of SCR detected and penalized 2.25 lakh persons for committing the offence of either Ticketless Travel or irregular travel or traveling with un-booked luggage. An amount of Rs. 7.4 Cr. was realized from these ticketless / irregular travelers, which is the highest ever ticket checking earning for a single month on SCR. The ticket checking earnings of Rs. 7.4 cr. during May 2013 surpassed the Railway Board’s target of Rs. 6.98 Cr. set for the month by 5.7 %. The number of cases detected during this month has shown an increase of 20% over the cases in May-2012. The ticket checking revenue netted is 23% more compared to May-2012.
The previous best for any month was during October 2012 when Rs. 6.7 Cr. were realized towards penalty from 2, 05, 000 cases.The ambush / surprise checks carried out by the Flying Squads in the Divisions and in Head Quarters helped enhance the effectiveness of the ticket checkingactivities being carried out regularly at various stations and in trains on SCR with an aim to curb the social menace of ticketless travel.
