Metro Update

1.    The DMRC carried over 26 lakh passengers yesterday (19.08.2013) thus setting a new ridership record establishing itself as a major mass transit facility in the National Capital Region.

2.    The earlier ridership record achieved by DMRC was 25, 04,900 on 08th August, 2013.
In view of the increasing ridership, DMRC has inducted the first 8 coach train on Line 3 yesterday. It plans to induct a total of 68 eight coach trains on Line 2and 3, out of which 31 trains will run on line 3 and 37 on line 2.

3.    Disruption on Line 3: Metro rail services were partially disrupted on line 3 between Karol Bagh and RK Ashram Metro stations from 12.40 PM to 2 PM due to a problem in an insulator located on the over head electrification poles near the RK Ashram Metro station.
As the insulator has failed once again and prima facie it appears to be design defect in these insulators. Therefore, DMRC has decided to:
1)    Provide sealant at all the existing insulators as a short term measure.
2)    Plan and replace insulators progressively as a long term permanent measure.
3)    As such about 2,776 insulators falling between the RK Ashram and Dwarka Metro stations are being attended to during the night hours after the closure of the train services.
4)    As the working time for such activity is limited to only about three to four hours when the trains are not running, DMRC will be able to replace around 25 insulators per night
Additional Information:
·         In urban Mass Rapid Metro operations, overhead electric supply poles are located at a distance of 40 meters with two insulators on each OHE mast. Thus, the Metro electrical engineers have to locate the faulty insulator after checking all insulators in that particular section. Once it Is located, the insulator is replaced within few minutes by DMRC’s engineers.

·         The insulators used in Line 3 are made up of Ethyl Venyl Acetate which was the prevalent technology when these insulators were installed. However, for the Metro corridors which were constructed later, Insulators with silicon rubbers have been used, which is an advancement over the earlier technology and the likelihood of such faults occurring on this type of insulators is less.
