LRTS can be ready in 3 years

To have same alignment, stations as MRTS
The elevated Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode will have the same alignment and stations as that for the scrapped mass rapid transit system (MRTS). The LRTS can be completed in three years.
The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC), general consultant for the MRTS, has informed the government that the LRTS will be a ‘cheaper, more reliable and alternative mode’ for the two cities.
The DMRC has decided to skip the proposal to reroute the alignment through Technopark for the time-being. Highly placed sources told The Hindu that the only change in alignment was the skipping of the Agraharam at Aryasala in the capital city and taking the LRTS via NH 66 from Thampanoor.
The locations for the 19 stations along the 22.2-km Technocity-Karamana stretch here and the 15 stations on the 14.2-km stretch from Meenchanda to Medical College in Kozhikode will be retained. The ballast-less elevated tracks will come up above the 1.6-metre diameter circular piers that will be erected along the median. The spans will be of 30 metres and 20 metres where the radius curve is 100 to 300 metres.
Standard gauge will be used and the axle load will be 13 tonnes. The maximum gradient will be 4 and 6 per cent in depots. The maximum curve radius will be 90 metres.
The estimate will be as per the prevailing market rates. The operation maintenance cost will be on the same lines of the Kochi metro.
The Kazhakuttam-Kesavadasapuram R3 corridor will take five years in view of the construction of flyovers and land acquisition that is yet to take off, the DMRC has said.
