SCR’s Record Performance in Freight (Goods) Sector Leads to Surge in Earnings and Traffic Volume

South Central Railway has recorded an outstanding performance in freight (goods) operations during the current financial year 2014-15 so far. The Zone has registered an impressive growth in its freight activity in the first five months period from April till August 2014, on the strength of increased loading of freight traffic, optimal utilization of Rolling Stock – wagons/locos and streamlined operational management practices for improved running of goods trains etc. It resulted in a remarkable surge in SCR’s revenue earnings and traffic volume this fiscal so far.
The incremental growth in physical freight loading i.e. the additional tonnage of goods loaded in wagons this year vis-à-vis the same period of last year on SCR stands out as one of the top performances amongst all the Zones on Indian Railways.
The highlights of SCR’s freight operations performance are detailed below:
1.   Originating Freight Revenue Earnings:
The originating revenue earnings from freight traffic during the period from April till August 2014 grew significantly by 14% to a record high of Rs 3301 Crs. It signifies an incremental raise of Rs 406 Crs over the previous financial year’s earnings of Rs 2895 Crs for the same period.

2.   Originating Freight Loading:
The cumulative originating freight loading of the Zone from April till August 2014 has risen by 7%, duly surpassing the Railway Board’s target too. The Zone has achieved 46.5 Million Tonnes (MT) of originating freight loading during this period as against the loading target of 46 MT set by Railway Board. It is also higher by 3 MT over the previous year’s loading of 43.5 MT registered during the same period.

3.   Major Commodities Loaded on SCR:

Coal : Coal, which accounts for the largest chunk of freight loading on SCR registered a cumulative loading of 25.2 MT from April till August 2014, an increase of 2 MT over the previous year’s loading of 23.2 MT, with an increase of 8.4%. The loading was also about 1 MT more than the Railway Board’s proportionate target for SCR.

Cement : SCR loaded 12.5 MT of Cement from April till August 2014, showing an increase of 1.2 MT over the loading of 11.3 MT done during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, with a growth of 11%.

4.  Performance Growth Factors:
Some of the major factors which contributed to the record performance in freight sector on SCR include -

a) Loading at Krishnapatnam Port:- The freight loading at Krishnapatnam Port recorded a robust growth of 31% during the five month period of the current fiscal from April to August 2014, registering 7.7 MT loading as compared to 5.9 MT for the same period in the last financial year. Coal, imported Iron Ore and Fertilizers are the commodities mainly dealt through rail at this Port.

b) Coal Loading from Singareni Collieries:- Loading of coal from Singareni Collieries stood at 2.7 MT for the period April-August 2014 of the current fiscal, an increase of 33% over the previous financial year’s performance  of 2 MT during the same period.

c) New Commodity of Freight:- Intensive marketing efforts of SCR led to the generation of a new stream of freight traffic i.e. imported Iron Ore from Krishnapatnam Port to M/s JSWT (Jindal Steel). During the months of July and August 2014, 256 rakes (96 in July & 160 in August) of imported Iron Ore were loaded carrying around 10.1 Lakh Tonnes, which generated revenue earnings of Rs 91.5 Crs.

d) Optimal Utilisation of Rolling Stock & Innovative Operational Management:-
     i. The BOX N (open wagon with air brake) rake loading during April-August 2014 has been 41             rakes per day as compared to 38.8 rakes per day during the same period of last year, a 5.4%           growth.
ii. The combined interchange of trains, which denotes the level of the number of goods trains run         across SCR’s system, during the period from April till August 2014 has been 220 trains per day         as compared to 201 trains per day during the same period last year, a 9.1% growth.
iii.  The unloading of goods in BOX N rakes during April-August 2014 has been 32 rakes per day as         compared to 29 rakes per day during the same period of last year, an overall improvement of           10.2%.
