With the derailment of 12 wagons of a goods train on Tuesday causing severe damage to 160 metres of railway tracks, Konkan Railway is carrying out extensive restoration and repairs "on a war footing" at the affected site since Tuesday, it said in a press release on Wednesday.
Tuesday's derailment occurred while the train was travelling between two bridges, and two of the derailed wagons were on one of the bridges. This required cautious handling of the wagons so as not to cause any damage to the structure of the bridge.
"The steep and high embankment on either side also made it difficult to tackle the derailed wagons," the press release said, adding that heavy rain in the region also hampered restoration work for a while.
"There is no direct road access to the site for easy transportation of the restoration material, and hence we had to carry the same to the nearest location and then move it manually through labourers," the statement said.
Konkan Railway has deployed one Accident Relief Train (ART) with a 140-tonne breakdown crane and an Accident Relief Medical Van (ARMV) at the site of the derailment. A Central Railway (ART) has been called as well.
Two excavators and more than 300 labourers have been deployed round the clock at the site to carry out and complete the restoration work at the earliest, supervised by senior Konkan Railway officials. The work is also being continuously monitored through remote cameras from the Central Control Room at Belapur, the press release said.
While clearing the railway track after the 12 wagons derailed, all the wagons had to be unloaded of their cargo, which mostly comprised 15,000 bags of wheat weighing about 750 tonnes. "Since the track was damaged and uprooted, we had to lay the railway track first and then take the crane ahead to remove the first derailed wagon and then repeat the procedure," Konkan Railway said in the press release.
As a result of the resoration work, trains are likely to run late on Wednesday. Konkan Railway apologised to passengers and travellers for the inconvenience caused and requested them to check the status of trains before boarding.
