The first ever Road Mobile Accident Relief Van introduced on SCR – General Manager examines on-field Demonstration

South Central Railway has developed and introduced a “Road Mobile Accident Relief Van”, which is a first-of-its-kind on the Zone. The relief van on road is meant to reach the spots of derailments very quickly to undertake re-railing and restoration works. Shri P.K.Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway, who conceived the idea of “Road Mobile Accident Relief Van” on SCR launched the same today i.e. 10thDecember, 2014 at the Coaching Depot, Bhoiguda, Secunderabad. Shri Kabeer Ahmad, Chief Mechanical Engineer, SCR and Shri S.K.Mishra, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad Division, SCR were amongst the officials present.

Later, Shri P.K.Srivastava visited Charlapalli Railway station to examine a live on-field demonstration of the capability of the Road Mobile Accident Relief Van, wherein the railway personnel undertook the task of lifting the wheels of a goods wagon derailed from the track. The derailed wagon was re-railed utilizing the equipments in the van, in a swift operation. The General Manager expressed satisfaction with the capabilities of the “Road Mobile Accident Relief Van” and appreciated the officials for developing this innovative product.

In general, in order to carry out the re-railment and restoration in case of derailments, Accident Relief Trains equipped with specialized hydraulic re-railing equipment and other special tools along with Mechanical, Electrical and Engineering materials are stationed at identified locations.  Well trained staff of different departments of the Railway are nominated to carry out the restoration work. At present in Secunderabad Division such Accident Relief Trains are located at Secunderabad, Kazipet and Bellampally stations.  As and when the need arises, these Accident Relief Trains are moved on priority to undertake re-railment and restoration works.

In case of minor derailment of rolling stock, running of such Accident Relief Train can be avoided on highly saturated, heavy traffic routes by deploying road-borne re-railing equipment with minimum staff for quick restoration. In order to achieve this, Secunderabad Division developed the “Road Mobile Accident Relief Van” for the first time ever on SCR, as per GM’s directives.

A lorry has been suitably modified to house the hydraulic re-railing equipment along with essential special tools and a few vital materials.  Further, requisite number of staff are trained and nominated to carry out the rescue operations with this Road Mobile Accident Relief Van.  This will be very handy to move to the locations where road approach is available to the accident site to carry out the restoration work very quickly.

The modification of the lorry has been carried out in-house by using the available material in the Workshop.  The Hydraulic Re-railing Equipment (Make – M/s.Hegenscheidt MFD GmbH & Co. KG of Germany) costing  Rs.48 lakhs has been kept in this van for carrying out re-railing of the derailed rolling stock.  Further, 1.5 KVA generator and other special tools have been kept in this van which are required for the re-railment and restoration work.
