More funds for lifeline, DC-AC switch may boost performance

Central Railway (CR) officials have got into the damage control mode following regular train delays, technical glitches and Friday's violent protests at Diva station.
The CR administration is pushing hard for disbursal of maintenance funds. "A sum of Rs 245 crore is expected to arrive this month to cover infrastructural revamp and to ensure better service," said a senior official.
The DC-AC conversion on the CST-Thane section is top priority. "If the switchover happens by February, then regular breakdowns will be a thing of the past. There will be minimal technical failures and this will ensure better speed, reliability and efficient running of our trains," another CR official added.
While several commuter and freight trains run on CR's 315-km corridor, officials don't get enough time for maintenance and repair tasks.
Officials admit that infrastructure has not kept pace with the growth in population. "In far-flung suburbs like Titwala and Badlapur, there used to be a few thousand commuters travelling daily about a decade ago. Now the strength of inhabitants has crossed over a lakh. In comparison there is no parallel growth in civic amenities and transport," a CR official added.
