SH. RAJEN GOHAIN MINISTER OF STATE FOR RAILWAYS VISITS CHENAB BRIDGE SITE IN REASI DISTRICT , J&K, ON KATRA-BANIHAL SECTION OF UDHAMPUR-SRINAGAR-BARAMULLA RAIL LINK PROJECT

THE MINISTER INITIATED THE GROUTING WORK AT THE FOUNDATION LOCATION OF MAIN ARCH AT KAURI END OF THE BRIDGE
Sh. Rajen Gohain, Minister of State for Railways, Sh. A. K. Sachan, Chief Administrative Officer/USBRL, Sh. Rajendra Kumar, Director/Works KRCL, had visited Chenab Bridge site at Kauri Village end in Reasi District of Jammu & Kashmir on 03.09.2016. This Chenab bridge is located on Katra-Banihal section of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL). Out of 272 Km. of length from Katra to Baramulla under this Project, 161 Km has been completed and work in intervening stretch of 111 Km between Katra-Banihal is in progress. The alignment on Katra-Banihal section crosses deep gorges of Chenab bridge near Salal Hydro Power Dam, necessitating construction of the mega bridge across Chenab River. The Chenab bridge, at 359m above river bed, will be the highest rail bridge in the world, and longest span BG Rail Line with Arch Span of 467m.
During the visit, Hon’ble MOSR(G) had inspected the location of Main Arch foundation at Kauri end, which is also referred to as S-50 foundation. Hon’ble MOSR had ritually performed Puja and initiated commencement of grouting work at the foundation location of Main Arch. Reaching to Main Arch foundation level was a challenging and daunting task, as it involves about 3.5 lacs cubic meter of rock excavation and slope stabilization with shotcrete, rock bolting and cable anchor bars. The MoSR was appreciative of the work being carried out at this location and lauded the endeavors of officers of Northern Railway, USBRL and Konkan Railway (KRCL) and AFCONS working on this bridge.
He also visited the site of launching of viaduct portion at S-180, workshop. He was highly appreciative of the work of launching of continuous steel girder on viaduct portion in curve of 2.74 degree by launching nose, which is almost nearing completion. This is the first time in Indian Railways that continuous steel girder on sharp curve has been carried out by launching nose.
He reviewed the progress of Katra-Banihal section of USBRL and was happy to note that about 40% of the work has been carried out on the most challenging project of the world having extremely difficult weather conditions, fragile geology, inaccessibility of the remote area and numerous underground surprises.
He also interacted with the local residents of Kauri village and media correspondents at Bridge site and was pleased to learn that construction of USBRL Project has contributed significantly in socio-economic development of the region by construction of about 200 Km of access roads in inaccessible remote areas, educational infrastructure, upgradation of medical facilities, solar electric lighting in villages, toilet block units, augmentation of drinking water supply, road bridges & tunnels on Katra-Banihal section, which was hitherto remote and inaccessible with hardly any infrastructure development.
