Hon’ble Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated the Stations Redevelopment Programme for Indian Railways from Rail Bhawan through Video Conferencing today (8.2.2017).
This programme is stated to be the largest transit oriented development programme involving a cost at tune of ₹ 100,000 crores in which the stations will be redeveloped and made world class infrastructure and amenities for the betterment of esteemed passengers. This may provide opportunities for generating significant non-traffic revenue also. The programme, as such, is a major initiative which is gathering momentum throughout the country at present.
In Eastern Railway, Shri Satish Kumar, Additional General Manager released the Stations Redevelopment Programme Booklet. Addressing officers, staff & press, he said that the vision for this project will help in developing all the places, restaurants, hospitality development like hospitals, retail development etc. There will be 400 A1 & A category stations across the country in 100 cities will be developed with PPP model. In the first phase, 23 stations will be developed wherein Howrah station has been included for development. In the second phase, about 100 stations will be developed wherein Sealdah station will be developed. In third phase, more than 250 stations will be developed. Station area, concourse, escalators, passengers lounge etc. will be developed. Prime land has been earmarked for this project at Salt Gola area near Howrah station where ten acres of land will be provided for effecting the project.
In Eastern Railway, starting from Howrah station, a total number of 15 stations have been planned to be developed in a phased manner over four Divisions of Eastern Railway as follows:-
