The women commuters of Western Railways’ Ladies special trains were for a pleasant surprise, when they were greeted with roses, chocolates and Paste on Badges with the message “25 years with you for you”, for showing their patronage to the ladies local for the past 25 years, by the ladies Ticket Checking staff at all the ‘ladies special train’ originating stations namely Churchgate, Borivali, Bhayander, Vasai Road and Virar. Also, special congratulatory announcements were made periodically at the originating and destination stations at departure /arrival timings. And to add cheer to this occasion, some of these Ladies special services were specially ‘(wo)manned’ by Western Railways first motorwoman, Mrs Preeti Kumari.
As stated by Shri Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, in a press release, W. Rly of dedicating an entire train to women commuters has gone down in the annals of history and has achieved the privilege of being the torchbearer for other Railways to reciprocate.
W. Rly flagged of the First Ladies special train on the 5th of May, 1992 with much fanfare, which proved as a boon to the women commuters of W. Rly who had to earlier struggle to board the ladies compartment in the regular trains. This service which was initially run between Churchgate and Borivali was further extended upto Virar in the year 1993 and it has been running regularly ever since.
