The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today started trial runs on the 6.5 kms stretch between the Shakurpur and Mayapuri elevated section of the upcoming 59 kms long Majlis Park - Shiv Vihar corridor (Line 7) of Phase 3, also known as the Pink Line. The Trial Runs were flagged off by Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director, DMRC in the presence of DMRC Directors and senior DMRC officials. On completion, this corridor will become the longest corridor of the Delhi Metro Network.
Delhi Metro’s new UTO (Unattended Train Operations) enabled trains will operate on this corridor. The new trains, with extremely high levels of automation, will now undergo rigorous trials between these stations to ensure that they are ready for smooth operations after the commissioning of the corridor. Initially, train operators will run the trains, but gradually, driverless operations (on the UTO mode) will be possible.
During these trials, the interface of the Metro train will be checked to ensure that there is no physical infringement with civil infrastructure during the movement of the train on the track and also testing of various subsystems of coaches shall be done.
The new signaling technology known as Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) will be implemented on this corridor and will undergo rigorous testing in stages. The response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. The behavior of the track system and the Over Head Electrification (OHE) will be checked repeatedly.
Interchange Facility on this Section
This section from Shakurpur - Mayapuri consists of 05 elevated stations i.e. Shakurpur, Punjabi Bagh West, ESI Hospital, Rajouri Garden and Mayapuri.
This section has one interchange station at Rajouri Garden with Line 3/4. The detail of the interchange station is as below:
Challenges Faced by DMRC During Construction
As part of Delhi Metro’s one of the most challenging corridors of Phase 3, the construction of this section had to be completed by managing heavy traffic at various points on the Ring Road. Besides construction challenges, land acquisition at Mayapuri and Punjabi Bagh also posed a bottleneck during construction. Major utility diversions also had to be carried out between Shakurpur to Mayapuri, like relocation of a Box Drain near Mayapuri.
1. Special Spans for Special Sections
This section consists of 4 Special Spans including 3 Steel Spans and 1 Cantilever Construction (CLC) Spans of length 60 mtr each. Construction of all the 4 Special Spans was extremely daunting due to heavy traffic movement on the Ring Road.
Steel Span was constructed as the metro alignment was crossing over the Delhi-Bhatinda Railway line at Shakurbasti which is 19 mts. high and is the highest amongst all the 4 Special Spans.
As the metro alignment was crossing under two Existing Metro lines i.e Line-5 (Green line) at Punjabi Bagh and Line-3 (Blue Line) at Rajouri Garden, two Steel Spans were constructed at both these locations. The Steel Span at Punjabi Bagh is also crossing over the PWD Under pass (16m Approx) at Punjabi Bagh Chowk.
One CLC Span was constructed to cross the Najafgarh Drain at Basaidarapur, Punjabi Bagh.
2. Acquisition of Jhuggi Land
This section also passes above two major Jhuggi clusters having 229 Jhuggis i.e. at Mahatma Gandhi Camp at Punjabi Bagh (which had 79 Jhuggis) and Jawahar Camp at Mayapuri (which had 150 Jhuggis).
In 2012, DMRC requested Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement (DUSIB) to take necessary action for relocation/rehabilitation of these Jhuggis as per extent policy of Govt. of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD). DUSIB is the statutory authority which is responsible for resettlement and rehabilitation of jhuggi clusters in Delhi.
The mentioned areas were handed over to DMRC after DUSIB had relocated all the Jhuggis i.e. only by mid 2016. The work on the entire section was completed except for the Jhuggi area (i.e. approx. 85 mts. at Punjabi Bagh and approx. 105 mts. at Mayapuri). Work on these stretches could be taken up only after the land was made available to DMRC in mid 2016 and completion of work within the deadline was extremely challenging.
