This is some good news for passengers of Bhubaneswar Railway Station. A much-felt need for a wide-enough Foot Over Bridge will shortly be fulfilled.
Bhubaneswar Railway Station currently has two Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) which get crowded at peak hours. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had on Monday announced full powers to General Managers to take decisions on projects involving passenger’s safety. As the zonal General Managers will now have full powers in safety matters, East Coast Railway General Manager Umesh Singh has given in principle approval to Foot Over Bridges at Bhubaneswar (3rdFOB) and at Bhadrak (2ndFOB).
Project is likely to be sanctioned within the coming week and work will be completed in the year 2018. This is a priority subject and ECoR will put in all efforts to see to it that this FOB gets full attention.
General Manager Shri Umesh Singh on Wednesday reviewed the position of safety-related issues and need for having additional FOBs at Bhubaneswar and Bhadrak came up during the discussion. In principle approval was given in the meeting itself and target of one week for sanction of estimates, etc., was given.
The new FOB at Bhubaneswar will be quite wide (6 metres span) with full link from Platform No-1 to Platform No.-6 . Bhadrak FOB will also have 6 metres width, said railway sources. Each FOB is likely to cost about 7 crores each as per initial estimates.
Now, the footfall of passengers at Bhubaneswar Railway Station per day is approximately 80 thousand and the Station is handling about 200 trains per day on an average.
Another major decision taken by East Coast Railway to control over crowding of Foot Over Bridges at Bhubaneswar is to ensure that some nominated trains do not go up to the end of signal posts and stop at designated places on the platforms. This will ensure that the crowd is evenly distributed between the two existing FOBs.
As of now, the FOB on Khurda Road end is more crowded than the FOB on the Cuttack end. This is because the train engines go beyond the edge of the platforms and towards the signal posts. A committee has been formed to identify suitable locations for stoppage of trains so that this problem is overcome at Bhubaneswar Station.
