On the occasion of the Conference on “Indian Metros: Collaborating for Excellence” held today at Metro Bhawan, the Cabinet Secretary, Government of India, Sh. P.K Sinha launched “I-Metros”, an association of all Indian Metro Rail companies which will be a forum for exchange of ideas, pooling of knowledge and sharing of experience, best practices, innovations etc. among the Indian Metro Rail companies to nurture excellence in performance.
The Cabinet Secretary also released “The Operator’s Story”- a publication by World Bank and Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC), Imperial College London, on findings of the research on “What makes Metros successful”.
Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Sinha said, “This suggestion that all Metros which are coming up in the country, should share their experiences and best practices, came from none else than the Prime Minister himself. I am very glad to find that considerable progress has been made. Today a platform, I – Metros has been created which will go a long way if it progresses in the right way in terms of sharing of best practices and adoption of the latest technologies.”
Sh. Sinha also appreciated the journey of the Delhi Metro and said, “Delhi Metro has been a real success story. It has been a case study. They have set benchmarks for others in the country. We have all seen it grow over the last 15 years or so and they have delivered their projects in terms of the world’s best. We all recognise the contribution Delhi Metro has made. I must congratulate them.”
In his address, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Sh. D.S Mishra said,“the government has come up with a new Metro policy only last year that is going to pave way for creating an eco system for the rapid growth and development of Metro systems in the country.”
The day long conference on “Indian Metros: Collaborating for Excellence” was also attended by representatives of Metro systems from all over the world who are in Delhi to attend the management meeting of the Community of Metros (CoMET). DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh and representatives from Metro organizations from all over the country were also present on the occasion.

A. “I-Metros” is proposed to be a platform to provide a forum for exchange of ideas, pooling of knowledge and sharing of experience, best practices, innovations etc. among the Indian Metro rail companies to nurture excellence in performance. This society will be registered under Society Registration Act-1860.
The objective of forming this association is to provide a common platform for all Metro rail companies for sharing experience, information, best practices, innovations etc. This association will also undertake and promote techno-economic studies and research. It will safeguard the interest and rights of metro rail companies and will be resource tank of information for decision making.
B. “The Operator’s Story” is a publication by World Bank and Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC), Imperial College London, on findings of the research on “What makes Metros successful”. The research takes evidence from long-term benchmarking and ten in-depth case studies of worldwide Metro operators and has been conducted at the request of Government of India.
The report gives guidance to Metro developers and operators on what drives Metro success and sustainability for the long term, considering the Metro’s physical characteristics, planning and design, and its funding and financial framework.
