opening of Majlis Park to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station of Line-7 (Pink Line) yesterday i.e, on 14th March, the total number of interchange stations in Delhi Metro has now increased to SIXTEEN. These interchange stations will enable both new and existing commuters of the Delhi Metro to have access to number of alternate and shorter routes from one point to another point across Delhi-NCR, resulting into saving of time and money besides realigning of the ridership pattern across the network.
This is for the first time that a record five new interchange stations have been added in the network in just little over two months’ period. Two interchange stations were added on 25th December 2017 as part of the opening of Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir section of Line-8 (Magenta Line). Thus, the five new interchange stations are: Azadpur, Netabji Subash Place, Rajouri Garden, Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir. Old interchange stations numbering 11 are: - Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Sikanderur, Yamuna Bank, Kirti Nagar, Dwarka Sec-21, New Delhi, Ashok Park Main, Inderlok and Mandi House. Another interchange between Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station & Dhaula Kuan station of Airport Express Line will also be possible.
These new sections and interchange stations of phase-III will not only help in addition of new passengers but will also help realign and decongest some of the existing stations once entire Phase –III becomes operational in coming months.
It is also noticed that Metro ridership, after a drop in October, 2017, is registering a steady increase. In January, 2018, the overall ridership of Delhi Metro was 69 thousand more than the preceding month indicating an upward trend.
Continuing the upward trend, the average monthly ridership increased further by 80,000 passengers in February. Therefore, the trends for the last two months indicate that the ridership of the Delhi Metro is on a upward trend.
In December, the Delhi Metro network expanded by 12.94 kilometres with the opening of the Botanical Garden – Kalkaji Mandir section. The average daily ridership of this newly opened section was about 45,000 in January, 2018. In addition to this, about 24,000 more commuters travelled by the Metro everyday in January in comparison to December, 2017. In February, 2018, about 49,000 passengers travelled by Magenta line everyday which again indicates that in the rest of the corridors, there was an increase of over 30,000 everyday.
The highest ridership achieved in December, 2017 was 25.64 lakhs while in January, 2018, the same figure stood at 26.85 lakhs. The highest ridership in February has been even higher at 26.98 lakhs.
Metro’s ridership is generally low in the months of December and January every year because of the holiday season. The same trend could be observed this year also. However, despite the holiday season, January registered a better ridership than the preceding month.
Many more new corridors slated for opening in coming months will bring in much better connectivity for the people and will have a direct bearing on the ridership patterns as the Metro will venture into many new areas of the national capital.
