CCTVs for stations in Maoist-hit areas

In a bid to strengthen security in the Maoist-affected areas stretching across West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa the Railways have decided to install close circuit television (CCTV) in ten stations in the region.
All these stations are located in sections where the night running of trains are presently restricted because of security concerns, Soumitra Majumdar, Chief Public Relations Officer, South-Eastern Railway said here on Wednesday.
The CCTVs will be set up at a cost of Rs. 3.7 crore and the targeted date of commission is April 2012.
“The stations none of which are major stations had been identified as they are located in sensitive areas on the basis of intelligence inputs,” Mr. Majumdar said.
Seven of the stations where the equipment is to be installed fall within the Kharagpur-Tatanangar-Rourkela station of the S-E Railway. Three stations are in the Kharagpur-Adra section, he added.
While six stations are in West Bengal, two are in Jharkhand and another two in Orissa.
The purpose of the project is to track human activity in the stations, suspicious objects that could be lying there, the movement of vehicles and management of crowds, Mr. Majumdar said.
Control monitoring rooms will be located at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) controls at Kharagpur, the GRP control at Tatanagar and Rouarkela and the RPF control at Chakradharpur.
