Kanyakumari-Thiruvananthapuram electric train service to begin soon


The electric train service between Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram will begin from next month, said the Divisional Railway Manager (Thiruvananthapuram), Rajesh Agarwal.
The service will be executed on a 100 km stretch, he told presspersons in Kanyakumari on Saturday. A sum of Rs. 100 crore has been allotted for the electrification works and the trial run between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari was successfully operated recently. The electrification work was supposed to be completed by the end of March but it would be completed prior to the schedule fixed, he added.
Safety work
Now the safety works on the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram line was going on and once it was completed the operation of electric trains would commence from the next month. The date of which would be announced later.
It has also been decided to increase the speed of the train operating on the Nagercoil-Tirunelveli line i.e 100 km per hour. The modernization of the railway line has already been completed and a trail run was accomplished successfully.
Development works
A sum of Rs. 1 crore has been spent to modernize Kanyakumari railway station by implementing various development and welfare activities for the benefit of passengers.
Development works to the tune of Rs. 60 lakh was also going on at the Nagercoil railway station. Moreover, all the level crossings between Nagercoil -Thiruvananthapuram and Nagercoil-Tirunelveli line would be modernized at the earliest at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 crore, said the DRM.
