Northern Railway has achieved another milestone in the upgradation of inter-city travel on the Delhi-Rohtak section through the commencement of the first MEMU service on the newly electrified section. As a mode of rapid transit system, Main Line Electric Multiple Unit Trains, popularly known as MEMU trains cater to non-suburban passengers, residing in small towns and villages surrounding urban and industrial centres. First introduced in Indian Railways in the Year 1994-95, MEMU trains have higher passenger carrying capacity and higher average speed as compared to conventional loco hauled passenger trains due to faster acceleration and braking characteristics. MEMU trains increase the line capacity utilization, and therefore are more suitable for running on high traffic density routes. MEMU/ EMU services form the backbone of suburban transportation in many metropolitan cities.

The work of electrification of 60 KM Shakurbasti-Rohtak double line section on Delhi Division of Northern Railway was sanctioned in Sept’ 2007 and the work was started with award of contract in April 2008. The electrification of this section also includes electrification of IOCL siding at Ghevra, FCI siding at Ghevra, Relief & mineral siding at Bahadurgarh, LPG & new LPG siding at Asaudah. There were 8 block stations enroute. The important stations on this section are Bahadurgarh, Asaudah & Rohtak. There are 41 level crossings, 5 Road Over Bridges (ROB) and 7 Foot Over Bridges (FOBs). There are 17 overhead power line crossings of 11 kV & above on this route.

The cost of detailed estimate as sanctioned on 04.02.2008 was Rs. 69.83 crore, and total expenditure up to Jan ‘2013 is Rs. 70.66 crore. With the introduction of full traffic on electric traction in this section, an annual savings of about Rs. 27.28 crore is expected to be achieved
