The passengers of the Lucknow- Vindhyachal Inter- City Express (14210) were in for a shock on Thursday when the train reached the Vindhyachal Railway Station around 2.25 pm.
As the train halted at the station, officials removed its engine to attach it to the other side. However, its 20 coaches started rolling down the slanted track towards Mirzapur before the officials could connect the engine to the other side of the train.
Fearing some untoward incident, several passengers, who boarded the Lucknow- bound train, jumped off the coaches and sustained severe injuries.
The train finally came to a halt only after it travelled for around one kilometer without the engine.
Initial inquiry by the railway authorities suggested that officials might have forgotten to apply the pressure break, which has led to the incident.
Station Superintendent R.P. Bharati told journalists that he ordered a proper inquiry into the bizarre incident. "A committee of junior grade officers will probe the lapses. It was a mistake by some officials of the department. The erring officials must be punished," he said.
Sources claimed that Bharati was so upset after the incident that he fell unconscious at the railway station after the incident.
Ramashray Singh, a passenger who was aboard the train when the incident happened, said the commuters were so panicked and feared that it would hit another train.
"The passengers started hollering at each other. The commuters who were on the platform thought that the train had started and ran to catch it," he said.
He further said more than dozen railway officials were near the track when the train was finally stopped at a place, around one kilometre away from the station.
Three days ago two trains had collided in Gorakhpur, killing 14 passengers and leaving 45 injured. The initial inquiry had suggested error on part of railway officials. The incident happened when Krishak Express that was going from Varanasi to Gorakhpur hit Baraunibound train from behind at a place near Gorakhpur around 11 pm on Wednesday
