At present, a high speed rail corridor between Mumbai-Ahmedabad has been sanctioned with financial and technical assistance from Government of Japan. National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRC) has been incorporated in February, 2016 to implement this project.
Action to enhance speeds includes removal of level crossings, reduction of permanent speed restrictions, replacing loco hauled commuter trains with Main Line Electric Multiple Units (MEMU)/Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) and introduction of faster train services at speeds of above 130 kmph, etc.
The High Speed Rail corridors have proven to be economically useful as they enhance the capacity of the rail network, reduce congestion on roads, reduce pollution, enhance safety, enhance urbanization, reduce migration of people and develop new markets with enhancement of service industries, retail sector etc.
