Railways' freight revenue up 9.26% during April-November 2011

The Indian Railways generated revenue earnings of Rs 43,106.76 crore from freight traffic during April-November 2011, up 9.26 per cent from the Rs 39452.32 crore achieved in the corresponding period of the previous year.

An official statement said here today that the Railways had carried 618 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-November 2011 as compared to 593.44 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.14 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 393111 million during April-November 2010 to 410378 million during April-November 2011, showing an increase of 4.39 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs. 5590.62 crore from freight traffic during November 2011, Rs. 2513.18 crore came from transportation of 39.03 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 459.76 crore from 8.36 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users, Rs. 565.22 crore from 8.80 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 273.28 crore from 2.92 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs. 317.43 crore from 3.52 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) and Rs. 311.14 crore from 2.62 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points.

The Railways also earned Rs. 443.55 crore from transportation of 5.20 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 92.45 crore from 1.03 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs. 282.19 crore from 3.09 million tonnes by container service and Rs. 455.68 crore from 6.51 million tonnes of other goods, the statement added.
