Walk from Old Delhi to New Delhi rly station in 15 mins

If all goes well, India's two busiest railway stations -New Delhi and Old Delhi - would be internally connected to each other through a pathway in the coming three months. For the railways, it would be a milestone in passenger amenities as Old Delhi station will be barely 12 to 15-minute walk from the New Delhi station."The plan is to build a concrete pathway along the railway track connecting the two stations. We hope it will be completed in two to three months," said a senior railway officer.Fencing will also come up on both sides of the track to control the unmanned entry points. "It would become like a big station premises and the pathway would cross the Sadar Bazaar railway station which falls between the New Delhi and Old Delhi stations. The pathway will be open only for bona fide railway passengers," the officer added.The track distance between Old Delhi and New Delhi stations is almost two and a half kilometer. The railways also plan to run a battery-operated vehicle on the pathway to ferry senior citizens and disabled people."The direct link will also make both stations more disable-friendly. And for passengers who have to take connecting trains, it will be a big respite as they can directly reach one station from the other," the officer said. Currently, if passengers have to go from Old Delhi to New Delhi station, either they have to take the crowded road or travel by Metro with heavy luggage. Once the pathway is thrown open for the passengers, railways also plan to introduce luggage trolleys.The New Delhi station, which was revamped in 2010 for the Commonwealth Games, handles a crowd of four to five lakh daily, whereas the Old Delhi station has a footfall of 3.5 lakh people."Initially, the pathway would be used by the railway officers and staff but later it will be thrown open for the use of railway passengers," the officer added.
