DMRC Opens Pedestrian subway at ITO

The Pedestrian Subway constructed by DMRC was inaugurated today by the Police Commissioner of Delhi Shri B. S. Bassi in the presence of the Managing Director of DMRC Shri Mangu Singh and other DMRC Directors. This Subway has been built using a special Box Pushing technology to avoid any traffic disruptions on the extremely busy Agarwal Chowk (ITO). The Subway connects the Delhi Police Headquarters and the Engineers’ Bhawan. It is a part of the underconstruction ITO metro station and will cater to the pedestrians who will cross the busy Agarwal Chowk (ITO) intersection.

“Delhi Metro is committed to the safety of its commuters especially women. We are hopeful that this subway will be of great benefit to the pedestrians who cross the busy ITO intersection everyday,” DMRC’s Managing Director, Sh. Mangu Singh said on the occasion.
The details of the Pedestrian Subway are as below:

1.      The approx. 71 m long and 5 m wide Subway has been built using a special technology called the Box Pushing Technology under the busy Agarwal Chowk (ITO) intersection. This technology was specially used to carry on the construction without disturbing the massive volume of traffic at Agarwal Chowk (ITO).

2.      In the Box Pushing Technology, six concrete boxes were pushed with the help of hydraulic jacks into the soil to build the subway. The jacks helped in moving the boxes 1m every day. Additional jacks were used on the side to ensure the straight movement of the boxes. The pilot jack pushed the first box, which ultimately connected to the other side of the street. The subway which is 9 m deep from the ground level was built inside the box with the boxes forming the perimeter of the subway.

3.      The Subway will provide a safe and easy passage to pedestrians crossing the busy intersection at Agarwal Chowk (ITO) as well as provide connectivity to the upcoming ITO metro station at the Concourse level.

4.      To provide the interiors with an aesthetic look, granite of three colours (black, grey and red) has been used for the flooring of the subway alongwith false ceiling and facia on the walls.

5.      The subway has 1 escalator at Gate no. 6 (towards Engineers Bhawan) and 1 escalator at Gate no. 5 (towards Police Headquarters) for the convenience of the passengers.  There is a provision for one Lift each at gate No. 5 and 6 which are under construction.

6.      Work on the subway started in June-July 2013 and was completed in August 2014

7.      The timings of the Subway for the general public will be from 6 AM to 10 PM

8.      The ITO station has 6 entry/exit points. 2 entry/exits on Indraprastha Marg are near Agarwal Chowk (ITO) near Delhi Police Headquarters and Engineers Bhawan, 2 entry/exits are on either side of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg and 2 entry/exits are on  on Bahadur Shah Zafar  Marg.

9.      Another pedestrian subway is underconstruction on Deen Dayal Upadhayay Marg. This subway is also being built using the Box Pushing Technology and will connect Entry No.1 (towards Andhra Education Society) and Entry No. 2 (towards Indian National Science Academy) of the upcoming ITO station.
