Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa said on Saturday that the work relating to the preliminary engineering-cum-traffic survey between Mysore-Kushalnagar-Madikeri will be completed in four months and the project would start in less than a year.
He was launching the first stage of the preliminary survey works on the route at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district.
Mr. Muniyappa inaugurated a railway ticket booking counter at the local post office in Kushalnagar.
Kodagu district was known for its natural beauty and tourism was developing very well in the district. Therefore, rail link was a necessity for the district, Mr. Muniyappa said.
Surveys were taken up in Kodagu in the past too but the reports were not considered for they would have resulted in huge financial burden for Railways, he said.
A railway link to Kodagu would help the coffee growers as well as traders in the district.
Several railway projects were taken up with 50 per cent financial assistance from the State Government during the regime of B.S. Yeddyurappa, Mr. Muniyappa said. However, the Mysore-Kushalnagar-Madikeri route was not included under those projects. Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had agreed in principle to release financial grants for this project, he added.
The previous surveys might have gone in vain but the current one would not, Mr. Muniyappa said. .
Although the preliminary survey works were taken up from Mysore to Madikeri, the first phase of the project work would commence from Mysore to Kushalnagar. The project was expected to cost Rs. 600 crore, he said. A number of railway projects were taken up in the country in the last three years, including Karnataka.
Kerala had requested the Railways to consider the Mysore-Talassery route for the benefit of the people of Kerala and two routes had been identified for the purpose —one from Mysore to Talassery via Kodagu and the other from Mysore via Nanjangud. Feasibility studies would be taken up to move ahead in that regard, Mr. Muniyappa said.
Mysore MP A.H. Vishwanath said this was a historic occasion and the event would put Kodagu on the railway map of the country. He lauded Mr. Muniyappa for being instrumental in launching the survey of the project and said opening the railway ticket counter in Kushalnagar would help people book tickets to any part of the country.
Efforts were made to provide rail links to Kodagu during the tenure of the former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao who hailed from Kushalnagar, Mr. Vishwanath said. It had come to fruition now. He too had taken up the issue of Mysore-Kushalnagar-Kodagu route with the Chief Minister who had agreed verbally to release funds for the project.
M.C. Nanaiah, MLC, said that rail lines could be brought up to Kushalnagar and terminated there. There were forests, hilly areas, coffee plantations on the Kushalnagar -Madikeri route which should be taken note of, Mr. Nanaiah said.
